H2 Hummer Air Bag Issues: How To Remove and Install

This video I’ll show you how I removed and replaced my air bags in my 2003 H2 Hummer. I know it may seem like it’s a struggle, but in reality I believe keeping the OEM bags and the ability to level your rig when towing and the clearance for technical off-roading is worth the effort in the end. There have been customer's units that I had to put chinese aftermarket carbs on - due to either unavailable OEMs or the customer just wanted a cheaper route - and invariably, I would spend more time and effort replacing wrong sized jets or troubleshooting defective carburetors than if I"d just rebuilt the original OEM to begin with.

      It’s the factory rad for the Hummer, other than be aluminum. I believe it’s a 2 row like factory. As far as a thicker one thick 3 row I’m not sure, but there was some clearance between the fan and rad. Might be enough room… It shows on eBay that a 3 row will fit a 2003 h2. Make sure you put in your year, make, model to ensure proper torment. If your trying to work the Tahoe,Chevy rad I’d check your measurements. Hope this is helpful.

    Do you know if that carb is adjustable? My original 2003 carb was replaced by an Amazon carb, doesn’t look like you can adjust the jets?

    • @MichaelEd
      @MichaelEd 3 місяці тому

      2003 jets are not adjustable, you have to change them out if needed. Altitude elevation and clutch springs usually dictate jet replacement. The only adjustments I know of on the carb is curb idle, throttle cable, and air/fuel. * that one is located on the bottom of the carb up in a hole. It’s should be a flathead style screw and it right past the float bowl and before the intake boot. Loosen your intake boot clamp on the carb side and also the clamp on the carb where the air box connects, you can turn you carb towards the side and maybe see the air/fuel adjustment screw. Be mindful the your choke cable, throttle cable and other hoses are still connected when and after doing this. I hope this helps out? 👍

      If it is just an LED bulb you put in the stock housing flip the orientation on the bulb. Most LED bulbs will only work when positive and negative match the OEM so if any is ever out just reverse the way its in.

    How did u connect the choke cable, I bought the atracypart carb.

    • @MichaelEd
      @MichaelEd 4 місяці тому

      It should screw into the same spot as before. Time stamp 6:23 on mine had a new screw connector, I removed the new one and just reused my original that was still connect to the end on my choke cable. Choke port for cable should be on the driver left side of the carb, just above where the thumb curb idle adjustment is located. ⚠️caution⚠️: That connector is plastic screwing into aluminum. You can easily damage those plastic threads when installing and tightening. Might wanna install by hand only. Just my advice.👍

    • @MichaelEd
      @MichaelEd 4 місяці тому

      WoW, I didn’t know that there is so little info on accessing them on a SUT! Just from a truck bed pov, I’d checked behind the bed liner, or remove tail light assembly to see if you can get to that plug attached to the inner skin wall like the suv. Only other possible solution would removing the inner fender liner. If anyone else has done this on a H2 SUT feel free to chime in. I hope this guide you in figuring it out and your able to replace those rear side marker lights. Fronts should be easy and right there when you flip the hood up.

      @@MichaelEd thanks for replying. I removed the brake light lenses but still no access. To remove the bed liner you have to remove the tonneau cover which is too challenging without help for me anyway. The bedliner does not bend so you have to remove the entire bedliner. Very satisfied with them! I’ve used Bilstein’s on my H3 I had before and very impressed. Haven’t tried Fox brand, but from people’s testimony, I would feel confident in them as well. Bilstein shock have always but worth the price, make sure you get the shocks that best suit your needs/wants for your rig. I think you’ll be happy with either brand. 5100 series are my choice pick for Hummers. I like the look of them and how they preform. Fox series I’d have to try their 2.0 with remote reservoir. Pricey, looks nice, but you’d be the only who knows unless you have a lift installed. Some people reported that fox seems little bit softer ride compared to Bilstein. My opinion for Stock Hummers: Bilstein all the way.👍 Thanks Mark for the awesome question. Good luck on your choice.

    Keep in mind that bulbs dim with use. It would be more fair to compare a fresh SilverStar with a FRESH basic bulb. I’m guessing the SilverStar WON’T be brighter. After all, they both run the same wattage. And a blue filter on the bulb can only REDUCE output.

      It’s just a R2 tip. Got it years ago off of eBay. I have a couple videos posted before this one just on the exhaust tip on the channel. I haven’t made any adjustments to the oem and not any yet to the new aftermarket carb. Yes stock muffler.👍

    how did you know that the shocks need changing?

    • @MichaelEd
      @MichaelEd 5 місяців тому

      I my case it was life span of the shocks. Shocks don't go out all at once; they deteriorate over time. Some show failure by leaking fluid and leaving oily like residue on the outside the shock. Sometimes poor handling is noticed also is another way of knowing. Examples are: bouncing, nose diving when stopping, leaning more than normal when turning, squatting. I had about 190k miles on mine, and like other maintainer items on the vehicle (tires, oil, spark plugs,brake pads) you should replace them to maintain proper performance, and safety.

      Man you’ll be so happier if you did. New lights on your Hummer will not only look good, but also improves your safety. Heck, it might improve your morale knowing that you fixed it and your rig looks as good as it sounds. Yes, I wish I had that supercharger that yours has.😎 Don’t stress, those panels in the back use push pins style clips, and if your stealth box is just mounted to the panel, you might could just pop the rear have of the panel just enough to replace the light. Go back and check it out. Time Stamp is 10:57 Of course, if you attempt this it is at your own risk.👉📝 your results may diff from mine. *don’t get in a hurry, take your time, don’t use too much force pulling on the interior side panel, use a pry tool (not a sawzall, lol) to help pop out the ouch pins as you go. Can you please explain how you removed the line fittings? I'm still confused. I'm about to attack this job in a few days and those fittings are what I'm hesitant on. Thank you. Oh and you said you drained the oil? I thought that wasn't necessary? Thanks again.

    • @MichaelEd
      @MichaelEd 7 місяців тому

      Those lines are easily removed by unscrewing them from the radiator. If you are using new fittings and you want to remove the old ones from the line, you’ll need to use a discounted tool that’s sized for the lines. *Like a fuel/AC disconnect tool. I used a small flat-head screwdriver to pry out those metal clips (time stamp 17:15) from the fittings. The “oil” that I was referring to was motor oil. As a reference as to how to get the antifreeze drained quickly, as mention in other videos on how to oil change by unscrewing the plug and opening the cap up top to allow fluid to drain quickly. Radiator replacement….. You got this!!👍👍 Don’t for get to burp the coolant system after you add coolant!! *that process is explained in a video I did ( ua-cam.com/video/gjloqWhq45w/v-deo.htmlsi=QAzwiVf8HKOK0lyJ ) Time stamp about 9:40 incase you don’t have time to watch it completely.

    Let me ask you something... I have a issue with my car (91 Mustang) that i haven't been able to figure out and i have wondered if maybe the VSS sensor is bad,its a AOD car, sensor is 32 years old, speedometer is not jumping more than normal for a old mechanical unit. If you ever have been on a commercial flight,when you land and they turn the reversers on, thats what it feels like when coming to a stop,its like the engine and transmission are not in sink ,thing shifts like silk and i have always taken super good care of it, many years ago it was doing that and one day it just went away and now its back,i think it has something to do with the idle so i was thinking maybe it could be the VSS sensor? any opinions? Fluid is nice and red, nothing burnt and the TV cable is neutral,no slack,no tension, thank you for your time!

    • @MichaelEd
      @MichaelEd 7 місяців тому

      🤔………. I’ve got some questions/pointers that might help lead you to find the issue. First let’s discuss the VSS in your car. Is your 91’ foxbody throttle body or carbed, and inspect the VSS to verify if it cabled or electrical? Most common problems experienced with elec VSS failure is jumpy speedo, poor/slipping of gears resulting in a feeling of loss of power, poor passing ability. I’m not sure is it can cause the trans to rapidly and prematurely downshift when de accelerating. that rapid feeling ( what you explained in your comment,) does this happen when your stopping while your wheels are straight, and/or when turning? *just something to take in consideration. Does this happen only in Over Drive? When stopping does this happen when the trans is in neutral? * with the transmission in neutral do you get the same results as you described? If so I’d look at the brakes, also your tires. *tires for proper alignment and rubbing, brakes for abnormal wear, sticking calibers, wheel cylinders, brake cable, etc. Maybe also check the rear-end fluid for metal shavings and consistency. If not then let’s go back to the trans. You can get/or test your VSS for operation with a multimeter or if the part is relatively cheap, you might consider just replacing it, whether or not it fixes the issue you’ll at least have a piece of mine that you don’t have to replace that part again. Might very well be a failing torque converter? This are only mere ideas/suggestions, and not instructions. Hopefully this helps out in narrowing and resolving your cars issue. When you get it figured out, come-on back and let us know what is was.👍

    I have a stock 2003 H2. Can I use the 5100s in the front like you did or does it require a lift? The bilstein site says "Fits vehicle with 2-2.5" front lift or torsion key lift", I wonder if that also means it will fit if it doesn't have a lift? Assuming the rear 4600s are fine without a lift. I think I have the original shocks and I'm almost at 200k miles and the ride is really wobbly now.
